About Our Paper

We published a paper calculating the Carbon footprint of our GI-endoscopy unit, with a focus on Scope 3 emissions.

What are Scope 3 Emissions?

Scope 3 emissions include all indirect emissions that occur in a company's value chain.

This online tool demonstrates a feasible approach to calculate CO2 emissions of the instruments used during an endoscopy.

Disclaimer: Our tool underestimates the CO2 emission since the manufacturing process itself (raw materials to product) are not included as manufacturers did not provide the necessary information.

Detailed data regarding CO2 emissions or material composition of the used instruments is not available.

For this, we created 11 reference groups representing frequently used materials in GI-endoscopy. We disassembled the most frequently used instrument in each group and determined its material composition manually.

Emission factors for raw-materials were looked up in commercially available databases* with the help of "Intechnica".

  • All materials of the reference groups were weighed and multiplied by the corresponding emission factor to determine the total product emission.
  • Total product emission was divided by total product weight to determine the emission factor.
  • Other products were weighed and then multiplied with the corresponding group's emission factor.
